A moment later, he yelled back, “Do you know when this place was built?” At that point, I had pretty much given up hope that a meaningful quotation was going to be the outcome of the previous 45 minutes. What was he doing under the floor anyway? None of the previous six inspections had involved a crawl-space interrogation. To be fair, ours is not a straightforward installation. We live in an 1830s semi-attached house—two storeys at the front, a single-storey flat-roof extension at the back—and we wanted air conditioning installed downstairs. We had already received two written quotes. Both were extravagantly overpriced—around three times what we had expected—and, strangely, they were within a couple of dollars of each other. I started to wonder, “Are these blokes all in it together?” My partner, however, was far more optimistic. “We just have to find the right bloke.
